Bandcamp Friday Suggestions - December

Today we return with our fan favourite “Bandcamp Friday Suggestions” article. This is an important day for us music fans to support Canadian music because on the first Friday of every month, Bandcamp waives their revenue share on music sales. This means that the artists you support on this day will get 100% of the profits from the sale of music. The importance of this particular Bandcamp Friday cannot be understated as we are expecting this to be the very last one. No plans have been announced to continue these days into 2022.

As we’ve done in the past, the Cups N Cakes volunteers have selected some releases they feel you should support. If you have the means, please spend some money on independent Canadian musicians today!

Jeff’s Pick

SEULEMENT’s debut is a mind altering foray into experimental electronic music like no other. Although the songs have a fairly mellow vibe, they pack a serious punch. It’s not often an album stops me in my tracks but EX PO did just that. I’ll be honest, I know very little about electronic music so the sounds created on this release will remain a mystery to me. One thing I do know, they wallop my inner psyche with emotions. There are only 18 limited edition LPs left, let’s get that number even lower.

- Jeff MacCallum

Gregory’s Pick

Saskatoon singer-songwriter Katie Tupper has released her second single ahead of her debut EP coming out in Feb 2022. “How Can I Get Your Love” features smooth, soulful vocals in the vein of Lianne La Havas, plus thoughtful instrumentation including lush strings, steady drums, and acoustic guitar that feels like it is being played right beside you. The catchy harmony response vocals in the hook are reminiscent of some of Feist’s more laid back songs. The anticipated new EP will be released through Arts & Crafts and is currently available for pre-order on bandcamp!

- Gregory Torwalt

Mo’s Pick

Dearly beloved. We are gathered here today to speak of the almighty glory of tasty music and the heavenly strength of good times. Come forth to learn the teachings of Boy Golden and the Church of Better Daze. Blasphemy aside, Boy Golden’s debut album slaps and brings forth nothing but positivity, big dreams and living life to the fullest. A blend of beachy folk-rock with a twangy country edge, the album is what the minister himself describes as "crispy". I highly recommend you study his sermons and then come out to BIG Winter Classic 2022 in Calgary to see them live. I promise you’ll raise your hands to the heavens and shout amen.

- Mo Lawrance

Joel’s Pick

Epic, powerful, and emotional performances with intricate arrangements executed flawlessly. Questionable lyrics designed to provoke discussions around logical fallacies surrounding current events that are often far more dramatic than they need to be. Fabulous music production that captures a high energy band giving it all it's got. If you appreciate music that highlights the skill of the players involved, that is this.

- Joel Klaverkamp

Noreen’s Pick

Get in the Van man! We’re gonna have a bong rip and take a little trip with Flashback. Something fine to blow your mind. A little doom to take away the gloom. Be sure to puff puff pass this record around and let your ears and mind get their fill!

- Green Noreen

Shaun’s Pick

Ultra-nerdy pop punk from Victoria. Short neurotic and infectiously catchy tunes about a variety of minutiae ranging from lab-grown giraffes to $36 breakfast. Sharing now ‘cuz their Christmas EP is the absolute best and you should buy it now, ya humbug!

- Shaun Lee

Brandon’s Pick

Winnipeg’s Nick Dyson creates what he describes as “acoustic sad”. His single TV Crimes features fascinating use of SFX, vocal effects, and the bone chilling pickings of an acoustic guitar. A song for the quieter moments, TV Crimes is a somber track bound to tug on your heart strings.

- Brandon Kruze

Justin’s Pick

Heavy hitting thrashing hardcore out of Montreal, Quebec. This little promo is filled with fast riffs, heavy yet catchy breakdowns, and mighty low war cries. Although it was released in 2017, I still listen to this promo regularly, and am dying to hear more from the band!

- Justin Olson

Lana’s Pick

A Winnipeg-born Canadian living in Spain making gorgeous acoustic indie-folk with lo-fi production. Reminiscent of an early Justin Vernon, 'Canola' is an ode to Manitoba summers and estranged relationships.

- Lana Winterhalt

Branton’s Pick

The first Friday night of the lockdown in 2020 is when my admiration, respect and appreciation for Adam Baldwin started. He stood in front of his MacBook with his guitar and mic and without a set list. His sole reason for doing this, was to help any one he could through music. The only donations he wanted was to a charity, none for him!, he just wanted to help in his own way. He continued live streaming every Friday night for months. This EP is a collection of six songs, recorded during one of the live streams, I believe, from Sonic Records, in Halifax. I am truly grateful to Adam for everything I learned while watching him play.

- Branton Langley

Joel’s Other Pick

Inventive and campy emo baked with metal love brought to you by one of the geniuses behind Vampires, Ghoulish is an entirely homemade soup of sounds where tongue haunts cheek. Of note is the impeccable drumming of angular and unpredictable rhythms coupled with nice feedback and screeching.

- Joel Klaverkamp
