Sled Island Announces 1st Wave

Calling all music fans!

Sled Island is once again pushing the envelope of creativity and bringing an incredible lineup of diverse acts to Calgary, AB from June 24-28, 2020. Mark those dates on your calendar because this year you’ll be able to see the neo-psychedelia of The Black Angels, Russia’s feminist protest pioneer’s Pussy Riot, the experimental R&B stylings of Sled Island's guest curator Sudan Archives, legendary free jazz group Sun Ra Arkestra, ambient soundscapes from Nivhek (a new project from Grouper’s Liz Harris), Australia's soft-rock crooner Alex Cameron and his saxophonist Roy Molloy

For those with an appetite for loud music, also appearing is drone/metal act OM, progressive black-metal monsters Liturgy, and the No Wave pioneer Lydia Lunch RETROVIRUS

Joining these influential performers are some of today’s most exciting artists, including indie-punk band Diet Cig, Scottish pop perfection from Sacred Paws, inventive hip-hop artist Delly, post-punk trio Control Top and Canadian electronic artist JOYFULTALK, who will be accompanied by a live string section for a very special performance celebrating the release of their new album A Separation of Being.

Each year, Sled Island’s guest curator helps to shape the festival’s programming through their own curated selections. This year, Sudan Archives has handpicked an incredible collection of talent, including the banjo-wielding experimental hardcore trio Show Me The Body, the soulful R&B artist SassyBlack (formerly of THEESatisfaction, now defunct), free-form jazz drumming extraordinaire Jamire Williams, Toronto-based electronic hip-hop artist Sydanie, transgressive avant-garde harpist/vocalist Ahya Simone, 19-year-old SoCal soft rock sensation Los Retros, Sudanese electronic mastermind Sufyvn, and the mind-bending experimental electro-pop of Daddy, (formerly Cat 500).

But Sled Island isn’t all music, also announced in the first wave are comedy headliners, Joe Pera (Adult Swim's Joe Pera Talks To You) and Jo Firestone (ShrillThe Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon).

That is just a small sample of the talent that will be on display in Calgary from June 24-28th. Over the next couple months, Sled Island will continue to roll out announcements as this round out their 2020 roster that will include over 200 acts!
