Premiere: TOVI - Mad Melancholia
Fresh off her sophomore EP Hard Feelings which was released in April of 2021, Alberta-born/Toronto-based synth-rocker TOVI returns with a new single accompanied by a playful animated music video she created herself.
The new track is called “Mad Melancholia” and it expands on TOVI’s electronic dream-pop sounds while also exploring cinematic psych-rock sounds. She teamed up with Toronto producer Josh Korody (Breeze, Nailbiter) in the studio, with mastering by Jesse F Keeler (Death From Above 1979, MSTRKRFT).
When asked about the lyrical content, TOVI explained:
“‘Mad Melancholia’ is a song about mentally spiralling. Those late night, early morning thoughts where it seems like everything is the absolute worst, the ones that keep you from falling asleep. Fading in and out of reality. I wanted the dramatic lyrics with the lullaby-like melody to feel a bit tongue in cheek, expressing this frustration of losing control of my own thoughts.”
And regarding her self-produced video, she continued:
“A lot of the song was recorded in my bedroom studio with instruments added/edited with Josh Korody in his studio. It turned out really cinematic! I felt inspired by both the sound and visual elements of the lyrics in the song to take a stab at creating an animation for the first time. It was all a big experiment of creating these moving sketches, that eventually came together as a full video.”
