Premiere: The Land League - Stoned and Reckless

“This single will suck you in with its psychedelic country warble and dreamy harmonies. And if ‘Cowboy in the Rain’ is any indication, then Winnipeg’s The Land League is a band to pay attention to for future releases.”

Former Cups N Cakes team member Jeshaiah David wrote those words in 2020 for a November edition of the “Quick Picks” column. The debut track from The Land League really got us excited about what would be coming next from this band. We never expected having to wait this long for their next song to emerge. But perhaps the wait was worth it and all the more sweeter because we are very happy to the publication premiering the second single from this act which consists of brothers Ciaran and Jesse Scanlon.

The duo formed during in 2020 while facing isolation and a lack of live music. After years of playing in bands around their hometown, they elected to move into the territory of the music they were raised on: Country and Western, Irish Traditional, and The Beatles.

Their new single offers listeners a glimpse into these influences. Western Swing comes through in full force as the song sets out to capture the electric feeling of spending a night in a bar for which you don't entirely belong, but end up staying for the night nonetheless.

It arrives today in the form of a DIY video, the brothers explain:

“We wanted to create a music video that was faithful to the story we told within the song. Stoned and Reckless is about the romance of the late night hours within a Legion hall in Vancouver. When we finally found the time to film the video, Omicron was spreading throughout Canada which gave us little room for shooting in various locations. So, as brothers we decided we would go the DIY route and film the video entirely within our parents basement, which luckily has an untouched 1980s wood panelled bar.”

Enjoy!
