Premiere: Holy Void - Fear In Your Mind

Winnipeg’s Holy Void has long been a Cups N Cakes favourite. We covered their 2019 release Naught (suffice to say, we were big fans of it), and now they’re back with new recordings for the first time since then. Their new song “Fear In Your Mind” comes out on November 17th, and you can listen to it a day early below.

The single is part of many new songs coming throughout 2023 and 2024, capped off with an album release coming in late 2024. The song is described by the band as “an acid trip gone wrong”, and the angular, chromatic chord changes in the verse conjure up exactly this kind of claustrophobic and kaleidoscopic atmosphere. However, don’t believe for a second that this means the song isn’t an extraordinarily fun ride; from the buoyant floor tom intro to the earworm chorus, the song is surreal, severe, and psych-y, with a great melodic sense and some solid pop songwriting chops underpinning the whole affair.

Holy Void will releases '“Fear In Your Mind” on all streaming platforms and through their Bandcamp page on November 17th, and be sure to check back for more releases throughout 2023 and 2024.

Jeff MacCallum

Jeff MacCallum is our founder. He created Cups N Cakes simply because he had a love of local music. Soon the platform grew beyond the confines of his scene in Edmonton to include all of Canada.

"I did it all very DIY. Everything you see was me learning on the fly. I'm a carpenter not a musician, or a journalist, or a publicist... I'm a carpenter and a weird crazy music fan that thought he could do something fun that might benefit something I care about"

Over the years, MacCallum's commitment to elevating Canadian music earned him a spot as a Polaris Prize Juror, a WCMA Juror, a consultant for music festival curation, and a dear friend to independent music in Canada.
