Video Premiere: Laughing - "Bruised"

The Cups N Cakes Network is pleased to premiere the first single from Montreal band Laughing’s debut record Because It’s True, out June 28th, 2024 via Celluloid Lunch. The band is made up of past and current members of Nap Eyes, Monomyth, Human Music, and Fountain, and the first single “Bruised” sets the stage for a revival of the kind of melodic, guitar driven pop music familiar to those of us who grew up in the early oughts.

The music video channels that exact same era as well, with the DV cam style footage creating a nostalgic feeling that compliments the song. “Bruised” is, in many ways, a perfect pop song; every shift in mood, whether it’s the moments where they pare back to just an acoustic guitar and vocals, or a short but tasteful guitar solo taking over the proceedings, all feels thoughtfully considered by a group of songwriters who understand how structure and arrangement turn a good pop song into a great one. It’s a delicious slice of classic songwriting that sets a high bar for the album to come.

Laughing’s new album Because It’s True (get it?) comes out on June 28th, and is being released by the folks over at Celluloid Lunch. You can preorder the record and listen to “Bruised” on Bandcamp now, and you can check out the music video below.

Jeff MacCallum

Jeff MacCallum is our founder. He created Cups N Cakes simply because he had a love of local music. Soon the platform grew beyond the confines of his scene in Edmonton to include all of Canada.

"I did it all very DIY. Everything you see was me learning on the fly. I'm a carpenter not a musician, or a journalist, or a publicist... I'm a carpenter and a weird crazy music fan that thought he could do something fun that might benefit something I care about"

Over the years, MacCallum's commitment to elevating Canadian music earned him a spot as a Polaris Prize Juror, a WCMA Juror, a consultant for music festival curation, and a dear friend to independent music in Canada.
