Premiere: Neighbourly - Does It Matter

The Cups N Cakes Network is pleased to premiere the new single by Vancouver Island’s Neighbourly. “Does It Matter” is the first track from the band’s forthcoming, self-titled, record, due out in October 2023. The new 8 song LP features a renewed focus on collaboration, with each band member contributing two songs to the record. The writer of each song also produced their own tracks, with the album being mixed and mastered by Latham Reader.

Neighbourly sits well within a burgeoning West Coast scene of funky, danceable, indie bands making waves in the Canadian independent scene. “Does It Matter” is a standout track from this scene; the almost robotic drum and bass lines are just busy enough to groove really hard, but still allow enough space for all kinds of spacey embellishments and guitar lines to take centre stage. The song’s lyrics are an internal monologue that questions if we’re really able to discern what matters in our lives.

“Does It Matter” will be available on all streaming platforms tomorrow, July 20th. In the meantime, you can preorder the band’s upcoming self-titled record via their Bandcamp page, or watch a live performance of the song at Haus of Owl here.

Jeff MacCallum

Jeff MacCallum is our founder. He created Cups N Cakes simply because he had a love of local music. Soon the platform grew beyond the confines of his scene in Edmonton to include all of Canada.

"I did it all very DIY. Everything you see was me learning on the fly. I'm a carpenter not a musician, or a journalist, or a publicist... I'm a carpenter and a weird crazy music fan that thought he could do something fun that might benefit something I care about"

Over the years, MacCallum's commitment to elevating Canadian music earned him a spot as a Polaris Prize Juror, a WCMA Juror, a consultant for music festival curation, and a dear friend to independent music in Canada.
