Video Premiere: Paige Drobot - "Alien Girl"
Today marks the release of the newest single from Winnipeg’s Paige Drobot, the doo-wop influenced “Alien Girl”. Drobot is also starting preorders for a 7” record out via Transistor 66, which will come out on November 8th featuring the aforementioned song as the A-side, and the still unheard track “The Clog” on the B-side.
“Alien Girl” is a sugary sweet little number that fuses the saccharine melodies of 50s doo-wop with Drobot’s punkier sensibilities and oddball lyricism to delightful ends. The song uses a classic chord progression, but changes keys twice at somewhat regular intervals, dividing the song up into a first verse, second verse, and instrumental section/guitar solo that are all in different keys. It’s a neat compositional trick to make something fresh out of a really traditional chord progression and melody, and by the time the guitar solo hits, up two whole steps from where the song started, it feels like the whole thing has taken off.
You can check out the video for “Alien Girl” below, which Drobot filmed in a grocery store during normal operating hours, apparently with enthusiastic support from the older ladies in the store. Make sure to preorder a copy of the 7” record, which you can grab on Paige Drobot’s Bandcamp page here.
