Video premiere: Paris Pick & Damien Alblas - Live

And now, for something a little different; today, the Cups N Cakes Network is debuting live videos from both Whitehorse based yacht-popper Paris Pick and Kootenay Boundary heartthrob Damien Alblas, to announce their upcoming tour together in Fall 2023. The live videos are from a show the two played together in March 2023 in Nelson, BC, at the Hume Hotel’s Spirit Bar.

For Alblas, the song showcased here is “Silent Lover”, which was inspired by a poem about all “silent lovers” that one may have and may never know about. The song features Pick on the bass, and channels a sound from the New York indie scene of the early 2000’s (think Jonathan Fire Eater or the Strokes), and shares that scene’s fascination with the pure rock-n-roll of the 1970s. Paris Pick’s song “Baby I’m Too Good for You” shares Alblas’ preoccupation with that same era, but pulls from a more soul/motown catalogue of sounds. The stage suddenly becomes a lot more crowded, with horns, Hammond organ, and a couple guitar players added into the mix.

This shared aesthetic will make for one hell of a tour. Tour dates will be announced soon, and in the meantime, the pair’s most recent recordings can be found on Bandcamp; Damien Alblas has a few live recordings and covers up, and Paris Pick’s 2021 record Hope for the Best is available for purchase.

"I did it all very DIY. Everything you see was me learning on the fly. I'm a carpenter not a musician, or a journalist, or a publicist... I'm a carpenter and a weird crazy music fan that thought he could do something fun that might benefit something I care about"

Over the years, MacCallum's commitment to elevating Canadian music earned him a spot as a Polaris Prize Juror, a WCMA Juror, a consultant for music festival curation, and a dear friend to independent music in Canada.
